Police in Dobsonville, Soweto, have recently foiled multiple armed robberies, including high-profile cash-in-transit (CIT) heist attempts. On April 1, 2025, law enforcement, acting on intelligence, intercepted a group of suspects along Elias Motsoaledi Road in Dobsonville. When police attempted to stop the suspects’ vehicle, a shootout ensued, resulting in two suspects being fatally wounded and five others arrested. Authorities recovered three firearms, ammunition, and a stolen Mercedes Benz. Additional vehicles, including a Quantum and Suzuki, were impounded during the operation[4].
The SAPS Counter Intelligence Investigation Head Office and several specialized units were involved in this multi-agency operation. Gauteng police praised the effective collaboration with the community, which helped provide the tip-off that led to the swift response[2].
This was not an isolated incident. On February 3, 2024, police also acted on information about a planned CIT robbery in Dobsonville, intercepting suspects before they could execute their plan to bomb a cash van. During the confrontation, two suspects were fatally wounded. Police recovered an R5 rifle, three AK47s, and three vehicles used in the crime. A manhunt was launched for additional suspects who fled the scene[1].
The recent increase in attempted robberies in Dobsonville, including a separate incident where paramedics were robbed at gunpoint while assisting a patient, highlights ongoing concerns over violent crime in the area[3]. Police management have commended the bravery and rapid response of officers, reaffirming their commitment to targeting organized crime and protecting citizens[5].
