Rea Vaya Dobsonville

Rea Vaya is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system operating in Johannesburg, South Africa. The term “Rea Vaya” means “we are going” in Scamto. The system, which began service in 2009, is designed to link the Johannesburg CBD and Braamfontein with Soweto, and it continues expanding towards other parts of the city[1]. The BRT network has integrated the Dobsonville area as a key node.

The Dobsonville Rea Vaya Bus Terminus serves as a major station located on Main Road in Dobsonville, Soweto. It accommodates routes such as C1, C2, and C6. The terminus is situated near prominent landmarks including Senyamo Primary School and Makhoarane Primary School. Significant attractions in close proximity are Dobsonville Stadium (approximately 1 km southwest), Mandela House (about 4 km southeast), and the Hector Pieterson Museum (around 4 km east), making the terminus important for both daily commuters and tourists[2].

Rea Vaya offers regular service between Dobsonville and central Johannesburg. For instance, buses operate every 30 minutes from Mashinini & Calusa in Dobsonville to Library Gardens in the CBD, with journeys typically taking around 29 minutes and costing R15-17[3]. In addition to bus services, Dobsonville’s park-and-ride facility enables easy interchange between minibus taxis and BRT buses, promoting integrated public transport[4].

New routes and complementary services connecting Dobsonville with other key destinations (such as Maponya Mall) have been introduced to enhance accessibility[5]. The system aims to address Johannesburg’s spatial legacy by improving mobility for residents living in the city’s periphery and increasing social and economic opportunities through efficient public transit[4].
