There have been multiple high-profile rape cases in Dobsonville, Soweto, with significant community response. In July 2020, three suspects broke into a home in Dzana Street, Dobsonville, and violently attacked a 61-year-old woman and her 21-year-old granddaughter. Both women were raped; the grandmother, Juliette Dakada, was also beaten and stabbed to death. The granddaughter survived her injuries and was discharged from the hospital within a week. In the wake of these attacks, Dobsonville residents protested outside the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, demanding justice as two suspects were arrested and one was fatally shot during a separate incident[1][2][5].

Investigations by the South African Police Service led to swift arrests. The suspects, aged 43 and 50, faced charges of murder, two counts of rape, housebreaking, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Police and local officials condemned the brutality of the crime, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing cases of gender-based violence and ensuring successful prosecution[2].

Dobsonville has also been shaken by a long-running serial rape case. In August 2024, Thapelo Malatji was sentenced to double life imprisonment for a series of rape charges dating back to 2011. His modus operandi involved robbing victims at gunpoint, kidnapping, and multiple rapes at secluded locations. Malatji was ultimately connected to several crimes and was apprehended in July 2020. Beyond the double life sentence for rape, he also received lengthy terms for kidnapping and aggravated robbery. Authorities highlighted the broader threat such offenders pose to the community and reaffirmed their commitment to combating gender-based violence[3].
