Dobsonville Stadium is a multi-purpose football and athletics venue in Dobsonville, Soweto, run by Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA). The City of Johannesburg gives its address as the corner of Montlahla and Majova Street, Dobsonville, 1863, and its commercial name as Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium. Built in 1975, it was renovated in 2009 to FIFA standards and used as a training venue during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The stadium does not publish general opening hours, because access depends on the match or event taking place. Before you travel, check the fixture or event details with the organiser, then plan your route. Capacity figures differ between official sources, so both are shown below with their sources.

Overview

Dobsonville Stadium is one of Soweto’s established football grounds and a long-standing landmark in Places in Dobsonville. It has a football field with an athletics track around it.

History

Home team and Kaizer Chiefs matches

The City of Johannesburg and SMSA both describe the stadium as the home ground of Moroka Swallows. Club and league arrangements change between seasons, so check the venue on the official fixture before you travel.

Kaizer Chiefs have also used the stadium. According to the club, Chiefs beat AS Simba 3-1 there in a CAF Confederation Cup match in October 2025, and their Betway Premiership home match against Siwelele was moved to Dobsonville Stadium for Sunday 6 September 2026. Chiefs said the stadium held a CAF Category 2 rating, while CAF group-stage matches need Category 3. That is the main challenge limiting its use for continental group games.

Address, Map & Directions

The City of Johannesburg lists the address as Cnr Montlahla and Majova Street, Dobsonville, Johannesburg, 1863. Some other sources describe the location differently. Kaizer Chiefs’ fixture notice, for example, gives the venue as Dobsonville Stadium, Dube, Soweto, and map apps may show nearby street names. Search for “Dobsonville Stadium” in your map app and check that the pin sits at the stadium in Dobsonville, not at another Soweto venue such as Orlando Stadium.

If your ticket or event notice names a specific gate, use that gate as your destination rather than the general stadium pin.

Opening / Access Information

Neither the City of Johannesburg nor SMSA publishes general public opening hours for the stadium. Access is linked to scheduled matches, events and bookings. For any visit:

Facilities

Searchers often ask about a Dobsonville Stadium gym. Reference sources mention gym facilities among the 2009 upgrades, but we found no public gym membership, hours or prices from the City or SMSA. Pitch dimensions are also not published on either official page.

Dobsonville rugby grounds

A separate rugby ground sits next to the stadium. Soweto Urban reported that the Soweto Kota Festival was held on the rugby grounds adjacent to Dobsonville Stadium on 6 and 7 September 2025. Check the organiser’s details for any event advertised at the rugby grounds, as it may use different entrances from the main stadium.
