The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) lists a Dobsonville office at the corner of Luthuli Street and Main Road, Dobsonville, 1863, phone 011 988 6872, on its Smart ID Card offices page. However, Dobsonville does not appear on DHA’s current Gauteng office contacts page, and the DHA page that once described the office is no longer online. We could not confirm the office’s current status or hours, so phone before you go.
If you cannot get through, the nearest offices on DHA’s current Gauteng list are Maponya Mall (Soweto), Soweto (Orlando West) and Roodepoort. Details were checked on 13 September 2026.

Address, Map & Directions
DHA gives the Dobsonville office address as the corner of Luthuli Street and Main Road. An archived copy of DHA’s own office page from 2019 (Wayback Machine) used the same corner and phone number and called it a small local office. Luthuli Street is also where the City of Johannesburg’s Dobsonville Customer Service Centre and Dobsonville Library are, so you can ask there for directions.
In your map app, search for “Luthuli Street and Main Road, Dobsonville”. For Maponya Mall, the office is in the Thusong Service Centre inside the mall on Chris Hani Road, Klipspruit.
Operating Hours
DHA does not publish separate hours for Dobsonville. In a July 2026 statement reported by SAnews, the department said offices usually close at 4pm on weekdays, and it extended hours to 6pm from 1 to 21 July 2026 for smart ID applications and collections. Arrive early, and phone first to check the office is open.
Online directories list Saturday hours for the Dobsonville office, but DHA has not confirmed these, so we do not repeat them.
Services Available
DHA’s archived 2019 page listed these services at Dobsonville: births, amendments, passports and identity documents. Its current Smart ID Card offices page includes Dobsonville. Services at small offices can change, so ask when you phone. Typical Home Affairs services are:
- Smart ID card applications and collections
- Passport applications and collections
- Birth registration and birth certificates
- Amendments to the population register, such as surname changes
- Marriage and death registration (check whether the office offers these)
The Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) lets South African ID holders book a slot for smart ID and passport services at participating offices. DHA says people without internet access can still walk in. Smart IDs and passports can also be applied for online and processed at participating bank branches, although DHA’s Gauteng bank list does not include any branch in Soweto.
Documents or Requirements
Smart ID card
- First-time applicant (usually 16 or older): certified copy of the birth certificate, and a parent, informant or legal guardian must come along with a certified copy of their ID. Certified copies of death certificates are needed where a parent has died. First issue is free, according to DHA.
- Replacing a green ID book or smart ID: a copy of the old ID or an affidavit if it is lost, plus a marriage certificate or divorce decree if your status changed. DHA lists a fee of R140. Senior citizens aged 60 and older converting from a green ID book pay nothing.
- Temporary Identification Certificate: R70, valid for two months.
Birth registration
Register a birth within 30 days. Bring proof of birth from the hospital or clinic (form DHA 24/PB), or a witness affidavit if the child was not born at a health facility, and the parents’ IDs. The first birth certificate is free. A re-issued unabridged certificate costs R75.
Passport
You need a South African ID first. An ordinary 32-page adult passport costs R600 for a first issue, according to DHA, and takes about 13 working days.
Fees and rules are from DHA’s identity documents, birth certificates and passports pages. You can get copies certified free at a police station.

Latest Official Source Update
On 13 September 2026 we checked DHA’s Gauteng office contacts page (which lists Maponya Mall, Soweto and Roodepoort but not Dobsonville), DHA’s Smart ID Card offices page (which lists Dobsonville), an archived 2019 copy of the former DHA Dobsonville office page, and DHA’s pages on IDs, births and passports. DHA’s Smart ID offices page is not dated. If you visit and find the office closed or moved, please let us know so we can update this page.
