Requirements & Application Process

Private landlords set their own requirements, but you should expect to show your ID and some proof that you can pay the rent. In return, the Rental Housing Act gives you these protections:

Receipts: the landlord must give you a dated written receipt for every payment, showing the address and what the payment was for.

No lockouts: a landlord may not lock you out or cut off your electricity. Only a court can order an eviction.

Before you pay: view the room in person, meet the owner, and do not pay a holding deposit to someone who cannot show you the room. If a dispute starts, take your ID, lease and proof of payment to the Gauteng Rental Housing Tribunal ([email protected]). Keep paying rent while the case is open.
